Blessed

What It Means to Be Blessed by the Lord

VBS Theme Verse: Jeremiah 17:7 – “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is in the Lord.”

Main Text: Numbers 6:24–26

“The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”

Introduction:

Can someone truly be blessed by God without trusting Him?

In today’s world, many have reduced the idea of being “blessed” to having material possessions—like houses, cars, money, or outward success. But according to Scripture, blessings go far deeper. Real blessings are rooted in a relationship with God, built on trust and hope in Him.

Who Was Jeremiah?

  • Jeremiah was called by God as a young teenager.

  • He felt unqualified and resisted God’s call, saying he couldn’t speak publicly.

  • He was given a difficult message to deliver—a message of judgment and repentance to the people of Judah.

  • Because of this, he was disliked and often stood alone. Yet he remained faithful to God.

Misunderstanding Blessings:

One major issue facing Christians today is the misunderstanding of what it means to be blessed.
We have often equated God’s blessings with material wealth—a common message in the prosperity gospel.

Ask yourself:
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Plant and you will gain understanding of Scripture”? Likely not. Instead, we often hear “Plant and you will be blessed”.

This phrase that’s often misused, suggesting that giving money guarantees material gain. But this is misleading.

Let us take the example of Job:

Job 1:21 – “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

True blessings are not about what we possess—they are about who we know: God.

What Does It Really Mean to Be Blessed?

1. Why Are We Blessed?

Because God is sovereign.

Colossians 1:16–17 – God created everything and everyone, and He holds all things together.

We belong to Him. He blesses us not because we earn it, but because He has the authority and desire to do so.
He blesses us because of who He is, not what we have done.

2. When Are We Blessed?

God blesses us strategically, in His perfect timing.
There’s great power in unanswered prayer—what may feel like silence is often God’s divine delay.

  • If God had answered some of our past prayers immediately, we might not be where we are today.

  • Sometimes, God withholds something so He can reveal Himself more clearly in our lives.

  • Instead of being discouraged, trust His process.

Pray and release your request into God’s hands—He knows what’s best and when it’s best.

3. How Do We Receive God’s Blessings?

Through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him…”

The Holy Spirit gives us joy, peace, confidence, and the strength to endure.

Walk in the authority of a believer.

You are blessed because the Holy Spirit empowers you.

  • The Apostles were bold not because of their own strength, but because the Spirit of God was in them.

  • Peter,  though he faced persecution he stood fearlessly and preached—empowered by the Spirit.

  • The fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—are signs of God’s blessing.

4. Why Else Are We Blessed?

Because we are legitimate children of God.

John 1:12–13 – To those who believe, He gave the right to become children of God.

Even when we feel like the prodigal son, unworthy or far from God, He still sees us as His children.

  • He loved us before we knew Him.

  • No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done, God awaits your return.

5. Why Else Are We Blessed?

Because we are Beloved of the Lord.

John 15:13–15 – “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

God’s love for us is unmatched.

He loved us when we were nothing—before we had potential, value, or direction.

  • Like someone buying a deserted, barren plot of land, others may see nothing there, but God sees future purpose.

  • He bought us with the blood of His Son when we were still broken.

Conclusion: You Are Blessed

You are blessed not because of what you have, but because of who God is, and who you are in Him.

Let’s reflect on Jeremiah:

  • Beloved: God loved him even when others rejected him.

  • Legitimate: Though he prophesied unpopular messages, he was truly called.

  • Empowered: Though he felt unqualified, God touched his lips and gave him the words.

  • Strategic: God told him to buy land in Jerusalem—even during exile—to show hope and restoration.

  • Sovereign: What God spoke through Jeremiah came to pass.

This spells out B.L.E.S.S.

Numbers 6:24–26 – “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.”

If you have peace, joy, love, and the grace of God—you are truly blessed.
